Sienna Plantation was named after Siena in the Tuscany region of Italy by the last two of seven unmarried daughters of former mayor of Houston, T. H. Scanlan. It has been speculated that the daughters selected the name for St. Catherine of Siena who is the patron saint of single women. The name also reflects the rich alluvial soil of the area, the color of sienna.

During the 1800s to mid 1900s, Sienna Plantation was known for its sugar and cotton plantations. Because the Scanlan sisters had no direct heirs, they established the Scanlan Foundation, a charitable trust administered by Linnenberg and benefiting various Catholic charities. The Catholic Diocese of Houston-Galveston used the plantation as the Cenacle Retreat from 1955 to 1967.
