In order to say the name of this city correctly, you must think of the fruit, the pear. Pearland, Texas was indeed named for its wonderful produce. Many called it, “the agricultural Eden” due to the richness of the soil and excellent climate for growing fruits and vegetables.

In 1893, the first post office was built in the town. Pearland was known as Mark Belt at that time, but in 1894, the plat of “Pear Land” was filed as an official establishment by Witold von Zychlinski, a man of royal Polish descent. There were 100 residents in the Pearland area at that time.

From 1900 to 1918, two hurricanes and one very bad winter freeze ruined the produce crops and it marked a setback in the economic development of Pearland, Texas, but their citizens could not be held back. They vowed to rebuild and replant. That is exactly what they did and the area has enjoyed great economic and population growth ever since.

The 2000 census showed Pearland with 37,640 people, but a count in 2008 showed the population had exploded; 90,700 residents. It is estimated that by 2011, the population of Pearland will grow by some 6,000 additional people. Forbes Magazine dubbed the city of Pearland, Texas as the 34th fastest growing city in the nation.

Pearland has ten major employers as of October of 2009; The Pearland Independent School District – 1,800 people, Wal-Mart – 800 people, HEB Plus – 500 people, City of Pearland – 429 people, Randall’s Grocers – 250 people, Kemlon Oil – 275 people, Turbo Care – 175 people, Target Stores – 150, Teleflow – 140, and Lowe’s – 132. Many residents travel to Houston for employment at the Texas Medical Center.

With eleven of the state’s best schools as well as The University of Houston in Pearland, it is one of the best places in Texas as far as education is concerned. The schools in Pearland have all received honors in educational excellence and Pearland also is home to a Blue Ribbon School, an honor bestowed by the federal government in regards to overall educational excellence.

Pearland has been named by the state of Texas as one of the greatest cities in Texas to raise a family. Single-family homes hold a median value of $280,000. The housing market in Pearland remains strong with new construction homes on the rise 15% above the national average.
